Why build yet another Frontend?

There are a lot frontends, quite a few of them listed at mameworld or the MAME Frontends Page at www.mame.net. There are even quite a bit of frontends for Unix. So why does the world need yet another Frontend?

Basically, most of the frontends are for Windows. This is a problem in my case because I couldn't get MAME in Windows XP to display the colors correctly. I might have overlooked something, but in the end, I wanted my box to run Linux anyway ;-)

Most of the frontends for Unix need a mouse to work, which I don't exactly have on my control panel. One of the exceptions is AdvanceMENU, but that one doesn't work on my system (svgalib dumps core). Another one would be pyReCADE, but after sending a few patches into Robert's direction, I tought that I might get my vision of an "ideal" (at least for me) frontend realized faster if I started building my own one, so here we go ;-)

Screen Shot #1

Features

  • Mostly themeable. One sample theme is included.
  • Filtering by Categories
  • Tracks play time and creates an automatic Favourites list
  • Configurable key bindings.
  • No Mouse necessary. Just joystick and arcade buttons ;-)

Planned features

  • Support for Daphne.
  • Support for rom bank settings via DaphneLoader.ini
  • See the TODO file for the full list

Can I get it too?

Sure. Just download the released versions from SourceForge or get the cutting-edge versions by anonymous CVS or CVS web.
